The fact that people now post 30 minute videos on YouTube and X to share technical knowledge rather than writing a blog post kills me. Video is such an inefficient medium and I don’t have 30 minutes, please just give me a summary or a write up I can scan through.

Thats why you watch it on double speed and fast fwd to the parts that you need help with. Having someone speak AND demonstrate AND with generated captioning on makes all forms of communication available instead of just 1 severely limited one. Also text only limits you to what the author thinks you need to know, while seeing the whole process at the same time lets the viewer discern details that they need but may not have been cared about by the author.

30-min video gives 30 minutes view time to the producer (if watching the whole vid). The text format blog is made easy for those web scrappers to copy (and/or distribute automatically in split-second). It's gonna hurt the producer (wasting time, effort, plus feeding know-how for free-riders). That's why long-form vids are more preferred than pure text and graphics. Also, English videos are easier 'copied' than other languages (though it's not hard for AI)

I typically post a 12 minute recipe (full video), a 45 second version (Short) with a related video link to the long form, and in both is the link to the written (Substack). No one has ever thanked me.

So I always find the video I need, click on it, pause, and check the comments. There’s always someone in the comment section who gives the answer I’m looking for. Well, not always, but pretty often lol

The "some people need visual learning" thing that pops up in response to posts like this is a red herring. The real problem is that these videos are loud, consume a lot of time, and are 80-90% filler (greetings, vanity, monetization, sales) that have nothing to do with solving a problem.

So the person without the skill is complaining about the medium of delivery of that interaction provided at no cost to them by others? In other news, it’s annoying that the person who dropped £20 on the pavement outside my house didn’t send it straight to my current account.

Damn man, I woke up to so many mean replies. There are a bunch that completely miss the point I was trying to make, and the majority of those don’t interpret what I wrote with any generosity, instead assuming the worst of me. This is why I hate posting on Threads, I don’t know any of these people yet they feel like they know me enough to insult me. 😕

It’s a reading speed and comprehension issue in some instances. I can read 10x as fast as a video or audio book will convey the info.
