Ok, Sweden, we’ve been thinking about a move there for the past several years. Got any advice? My husband and teen kids (12, 14 & 19) are in the process of obtaining an EU passport. Got any advice? My husband works in tech.

Start taking Swedish lessons, lots of great resources in Seattle. I got myself to a B1 level prior to moving and it was a huge help with integrating. With EU citizenship it will be easier to just move and start working. Finding a first hand rental requires a long queue wait, second hand rentals are more expensive and close to Seattle prices. Check Blocket and Qasa to browse rental listings. Be prepared for a massive cut in salary, for the same job from Seattle to Stockholm my pay decreased 43%.

If you can afford it, buying is much more affordable than renting. 15% down payment and loans are much easier to get than the US if you have a good salary and ”fast” employment contract. Check Hemnet for home listings. Climate wise, Stockholm is very similar to Seattle, but colder and more snow in the winter. If you’re husband is in tech, assume you’re looking at Stockholm. Göteborg (Gothenburg) is where Volvo and Tesla are if he lands a job there.

Finding a job here (especially from overseas) can be quite tough. I interviewed with 4-5 companies before moving here and while I had several interviews each, never landed a job offer. Was only able to move after my company agreed to a relocation. Have also interviewed multiple times since living here and never quite made it to a job offer, even with being fluent in Swedish (quite competitive here in Tech). It can be done, but be prepared for a lot of no’s before you get that job offer.

When you do move, make an appointment with Skatteverket (tax agency) for the day after you land to apply for your Personnummer and Folkbokföring. You literally can’t do anything here without it (no bank account, no loyalty programs, no rental contract, etc). This can take a while to get, so make sure that’s the very first thing you do.

Tech salaries are not as well paid in Sweden as in the US.

Make sure you got all research done on what's needed for a foreigner to get accepted by skatteverket. Eu citizens have it easier than one Eu citizens. So do all research you can and if you manage it welcome to Sweden i hope you and your family will like it here !

What do you mean obtaining an EU passport? I am assuming that he has some connection to some European country where he’s eligible for a passport. In any event, I work in the tech industry and the jobs are starting to dry up plus the salaries here are much much lower than in the US. I do all right and have a fairly comfortable life, but I would earn three or four times more in the US doing what I do now and would have much more disposable income, even with health insurance and university costs.

You are welcome! Great country and great people. I love Sweden! We've had a certain problem with a neo nazi run government and a hateful extreme right wing community, but unfortunately that is a problem in all of Europe and the Nordic countries. Check out the Malmö, Helsingborg and Linköping regions. Cheaper than Stockholm but with a great tech community.

As stated before. There is no such thing as an EU passport. To get a Swedish citizenship, you to wait at least five years, often longer if you are eligible. Need to learn Swedish to manage well in society. However, rights now, it’s fairly easy to get a working visa, if you have a job in Sweden. But if you loose your job, then out after three months. In general, it’s easier to imigrate to US than EU. No special treatment if you are an US citzen.
