Today I totally missed a doctor’s appointment because I didn’t see my calendar notification or appointment block (adhd tax). So, I called the office and profusely apologized…and her response floored me: “I’ll waive the fee for you…because you’re not yelling at me” I had to ask her to clarify because this was MY mistake - and she confirmed that when people miss their appointments, they routinely yell at her. What is wrong with us? When did we become so uncivil to one another?

I routinely give discounts to people that treat me like a person because I'm so used to the rest of the crowd (70% or so) either not seeing me as a human being or treating me like I'm something they found on their shoe and a dog park

Yup! Basic manners is like gold these days. I probably would have done the same.

The veterinary office we use has signs up about how they will no longer serve aggressive humans.

I don’t know cuz normally I’m the one who gets yelled at. Who are these people that yell at their doctor’s assistants? I literally got spoken to in a rude tone by a specialist’s asisstant because somehow she misplaced me on the waitlist for surgery and then made me wait a month to tell me I was going to have to get a new referral to see the doctor again to get back on the list. Thanks to her incompetence and lack of interest to help me correct her mistake, I’m set back two years and counting.

When I worked in retail we used to use the applicable spend discounts for the customers we liked - store policy was not to offer unless they asked for a bulk buy price. On more than one occasion I marked things up for complete jerks. Items that were in the system for 50% clearance that hadn't been ticketed were magically full price again. Be nice, have an easier life.

I remember working retail as a teen. I more often than not spent my breaks crying in a bathroom or outside because of customer abuse. I would follow the rules, tell a customer "No, I can't do that" or "No, we're out", they would scream at me, and without fail the manager would ALWAYS baby them. Their temper tantrum would be rewarded with special treatment, policy bending, having someone deliver inventory from another location, etc. They learned yelling will get them their way.

As a healthcare professional who works in a clinic, I can attest to the fact that people can be awful and they don’t want to take responsibility for themselves. Nothing is ever their fault; always blaming others. The entitlement is unbelievable as well. And it’s not new, either. It’s been going on for over a decade; just getting worse.
