I am “that teacher,” and I am humbly honored. It was the period right after lunch, and a group of kids come to my class and ask for help. As my scheduled students worked on their projects, I asked what could I do for the crew that said they needed me. They introduced me to a boy who isn’t my student and said he had PE next class but he didn’t eat lunch, so if I had any snacks could I share them with him. Cont. 1/2

An an assistant principal and principal at an alternative public high school, I noticed that many students could not afford breakfast or lunch. My office was located in the main office building but it had a separate back entrance. I bought a fridge and snacks and microwave meals for students. 2 小時內	Kristy Topalovich kp10911	I have students I have never met come into my classroom and say “you got noodles?”…the number of students I have gotten to know that come for my snacks and then stay for chats, homework help, check ins…they call me Titi, Auntie, and even mom 😂😭 being “that teacher” has been the most fulfilling part of my career, and even life. I have students that graduate and then reach out for advice on careers, housing, babies….and it all started with snacks 🫶🏼

We would make little sandwiches as free time, a game, or a lesson. This way - I knew every tummy was full. I resigned 20 years ago when my oldest was born. I miss my job, I miss the way it was….

Something that always intrigued me was that students who came from low income homes, always chose huge portions of fresh vegetables and fruit for lunch. I didn’t see the same response from others. I’m thankful there are educators like you in our world. ❤️
