I've been DM / GM for over 25+ years now. Started back in D&D 2nd Ed. The difference between players from 20 years ago and today are like night and day. People ask me all the time if I'd be willing to GM for their table of new players using 5th Ed. I will generally decline, unless they agree to try a different game outside D&D 5th Ed afterwards. Personally, I love what 5th Ed has done for the TTRPG community. What I don't like is the 5th Ed system and the player entitlement it brought.
