Ignoring temperature, 3:1 ratio, how far does a microphone need to move from a source to flip the waveform 180 degrees? I'm trying to get in my head a rough number for moving a microphone when it's not perfectly phase coherent with another. 1ft/ms isn't translating to "move that x inches to fix" and I'm looking for FRIENDLY help. If you think my question is dumb, sorry, I'm dumb and learning 😀

22 分鐘內	Giles Reaves gilesreaves	I think you may be confusing polarity with phase. Phase is tied to frequency. 180° shift at one frequency would require a different distance than another. Plus, when you solve for one frequency you likely cause an issue at another. The key to remember is that phase is related to delay, polarity is simply chaning the signs (swapping positive and negative values). You can’t adjust polarity with distance, you can’t adjust phase with polarity (except at one frequency and it’s octaves).

2 小時內	James Hargrove hjamestwo	The 1khz being about a foot is a phase rule of thumb, and matches the delay rule of thumb of 1 Ms per foot if you think about it enough. The 1 inch versus 7 inches would then be higher frequencies instead of longer times. 1/12 of a kHz and 7/12 of a kHz.
