One reason you have to listen to a language you’re learning is because pronunciation isn’t always intuitive. On X-Men, Wolverine’s name is said ウルヴァリン (uruvarin) in Japanese. Instinctually, I want to start high on the “u” and follow the pitch accent down to the “rin,” but the “ru” is a higher pitch than the initial “u” so to a native English speaker like me, it sounds like they’re saying “u-RU-va-RIN”or “u-RU-ba-RIN” instead of “U-ru-ba-rin.”
