I've been there 21 times, my French is terrible so I speak in English when I'm there, and never once has anyone ever been rude to me. It really is all about how you present yourself. Speak softly, don't travel in groups, and don't cause a scene = no problems, no matter where you are in the world. Including and especially in France.
