One of the first words I ever spoke was “halmi,” shorthand for “hahlmuhnee,” which means “grandmother.” This is not surprising since my maternal grandmother taught me how to speak. But, because of the strict rules governing Korean etiquette, I was never allowed to address my grandmother, or even speak of her, by name.
