As a 43 year old lifelong fan of hip-hop, there’s nothing more irritating than arguing with 20 year olds about hip-hop history. They say shit like “Jay-Z was never the hottest rapper in the game” and “People just say they like Illmatic to look cool.” Son, you were in 6th grade when Kendrick Lamar came out. Hush.

But technically at least statistically he never was the hottest there was always someone who charted either charted higher than him and out sold him whether it was DMx Eminem Ludacris Nelly or Lil Wayne there always someone there the was a little better than he was. Now subjectively that can an argument because media outlets always gave him that push which back anyone’s personal opinions on whether or not he was the hottest.

He was never statistically the hottest rapper in any of those years he was being outsold by some heavy hitters. There were just too many artist who were having their monster runs while he was active.
