So, I live on the other side of the world from my adult children. Every year I send them and my grandchildren something for Christmas. And every year I hear about the high cost of shipping as the reason there’s nothing under my own tree. It’s not the material things that matter to me but am I out of line to feel a bit neglected? I mean, how do you even bring this up without sounding mercenary?

Sometimes we assign meaning to things that don’t mean that. Accept what your kids have to offer in love and affection and recognize gift giving isn’t their love language. Maybe ask for a set weekly FaceTime or something non-monetary to feel connected and loved from them.
13 小時內	Susan Case scasewv	I think you don’t bring it up. I think it’s best to accept our adult kids for who they are. To love them and be happy when we see them, but not have expectations of them. They are who they are at this point. Time to love yourself. Maybe instead of buying them gifts, buy some for yourself! If it were me, I’d still send gifts for the kids, but let it go for the adults. I’d say, you’re right, shipping is so high, so I’m cutting back. And buy yourself something lovely!

But maybe don’t worry about yourself especially if they are living far away and immersed in work and parenting and just life.. at least you can be grateful they are alive and healthy and hopefully you catch up with them now and again. You don’t want to estrange yourself entirely…
