This year was hard. Lonely, even. There were days when it felt like everyone had moved on without me. But as I get ready for 2024 I can’t help but hold onto a few moments from 2024 that were full of hope. 1: My birthday: I spent it on a work trip in El Salvador, and my coworkers surprised me with a cake. It was embarrassing in the best way and made me feel seen.

I had no idea how hard that would be, but it was made easier when my best friend’s family basically took me in as a second kid. They had (still have, as of this writing) a big old house in a small town in the plains of Illinois. That place, and that town became my second home.
