Yes, she is older, but her relationships with multiple family members is strained and she doesn’t know why. I’m trying to help. I explained that the world has changed. Personal autonomy is more important. Expecting people to act or treat you a certain way just because that is what traditional roles dictate - is a thing of the past. She told me I was ridiculous that she is still my mother and can tell me what to do. 🤦‍♀️ I’m in my late ‘50’s. I was not prepared for how much this irritated me.

Oh yeah, it’s her, not you! Just repeat that to yourself and go about your day. She won’t change and you can save yourself the aggravation. My mother in law used to drop hints and expected me to automatically know her needs. Frustrating for sure.

I brought up a concern about my mum when I went with her to her drs appointment. She told me “not to speak unless I’m spoken too”! Ok. She collapsed at home 2 weeks later and died of sepsis.🤷🏼‍♀️

As they age, they definitely revert back to child like, toddler behavior. I’m guessing the social awareness and manners are the first to go as we age. Or early sings of dementia. Where they start making demands, are impatient, and can’t regulate emotions anymore.

Wow this hit a nerve. I am tired, so tired, of seeing my husband broken by his mum. He wants a mum, she wants an unpaid servant. The entitlement of expectation that she gets what she wants as soon as she wants it without regard to his health work, other responsibilities is frightening.

I lost my Dad when I was 10 and my Mom at 44. I hear what you’re saying about your Mom, but keep being patient and kind because you never know when your last visit will be. 🙏🫶

My mum was lovely to the end. My father, though, was quite a selfish and very controlling man who kept Mum under his thumb. When they visited me for a week, around 2007, he'd say stuff like "a cup of tea would be nice" which was his way of ordering Mum to make it. I noticed, signalled her to go elsewhere and proceeded to point out where the kettle was, then the cups, teaspoons, teabags and sugar were. He made his tea. He was not happy with me. 1/2

Had to sit my 84 yr old mother down and explain that she cannot expect me there 24/7 and that neither of us had ever done this b4. Previously when my g parents passed, she had either her siblings or my dad and his siblings. Its just us now and I can't do it all AND work full time. Luckily in UK and my mum had a good retirement pot and lives in an assisted living flat. Can't imagine if she lived with me or we had money issues!
