An unstated question during the H-1B discourse was how much of a shortage of skilled workers still exists given years of tech layoffs and Ivy League graduates struggling to find work?

I'll add that while most of the H-1Bs I've worked with have been solid, the stated reason for needing to hire an H-1B (and one that is supposedly required before opening that req) is that they possess a talent that you cannot find here. I have rarely found that to be an obvious characteristic in these people for the roles that they were filling.

I’ve been working in the IT sector for 18 years I am losing my job due to a globalization contract all the US based employees will be phased out…I skipped college because in tech it was always emphasized that your skills matter more than that job. Compound H1B with DEI and in tech I’m just a target. Because I DEI (don’t ever include) has been a career struggle….I have sincerely decided to switch careers and become a therapist. I really just want to spend my days helping people heal.

"Shortage of workers" from an employers POV must always be understood as "shortage of workers willing to work for us given the pay and conditions we are willing to offer" I do think that the tech industry is still a growth industry and we may legitimately need to import some workers to keep up with that, but that doesn't mean that some employers aren't just making excuses

Id recommend him venture into something related to AI. Like AI support engineer or AI moderator. That's where the jobs are right now. Along with either data analysis and even cybersecurity.

“In 2024, the tech industry faced a challenging landscape, with nearly 440 companies eliminating over 135,000 roles, according to Layoffs.fyi. This wave of layoffs is compounded by the increasing vulnerability of remaining traditional tech jobs becoming obsolete or degraded by AI.” Should have chosen Finance.
