I live in Canada, where English and French are the two main languages. I went to a shop recently and the worker essentially refused to serve me in English. I am fluent in English AND French, so I don't really care, but for some reason this incident bothered me. Whenever, I go there now I purposefully speak English (cashier, worker etc.)

In flamish belgium they would not serve my french husband in the shop. I am french too but from Provence. So thanks to my singing accent they always served me...

Quebec remains a French Province. While I strongly encourage the new gens to learn english, why would you expect us to change our language for you? Go to any small towns and the chances of being spoken to in English is slim to none. Are people not supposed to not have jobs anymore because you want to be served in English? Are we supposed to never speak french again? Would you complain the same if you were visiting France? Belgium? Maybe you should consider moving if this bothers you.

As a visible minority in Montréal, it always frustrates me that workers will usually refuse to serve me in French and resort to English 🙈

This is why I refuse to learn French. If they can speak both languages then they have no right to refuse to speak both languages

I don’t speak French, so if that happened to me they wouldn’t be able to sell me anything. It would be a minor inconvenience to go to some other shop.

Quebec is not English, it is French. Bilingualism only applies at the federal level for federal services, the only bilingual province is New Brunswick, everywhere but Quebec is English. Word of advice, don't be a dick, you're disrespecting centuries of hard fought language and cultural tradition, Bill 101 was created for a reason.

My bf is from Montreal, where French is the official language. They work to protect it since the younger generation is shifting to English. When we go out, I let him speak while I try the basics. The older generation, I think, is more particular about the French language. People are polite if they see you trying, and many will switch to English if needed. But, some can come off as rude if you don’t speak French. In Quebec City, most people are French speakers and don’t speak English at all.
