I cannot explain how envious I am of Japan's high speed rail system. As an American, what the fuck are we doing?

America is too large for the trains. Aeroplane is way too convenient thinking of time you need to get to the destination absurdly far away. Japanese train system was developed for the fact that only a fraction of people had cars in the past. Many had no choice but rely on the train network. American were dependent on horses and the cars were developed at enormous speed for transport. So train systems were not a priority for the politicians but swift development of highways.

They signed to bring Japanese bullet train to Dallas - Houston. Expect it’s been 20years since they decided to do it and it hasn’t happened yet

To everyone commenting that the US is too big, China is also a big country but have successfully built their own high speed railway. The problem with America is our car centric culture. Our infrastructure is solely built for cars (big roads, alack of sidewalks, huge highway networks). Unless you live in a metropolitan, owning a car is a necessity and its a pain to have to drive everywhere. Well that’s why I live in Japan now and their shinkansen is awesome!

America is several times the size of Japan. Too expensive.
