Does it drive anyone else absolutely bonkers when someone says ‘could of’ instead of could’ve? 😭😩

I distinctly remember in second grade writing a story and asked my teacher how to spell “of” so I could write “could of” (🤦‍♀️) and then vehemently disagreed with her that it was in fact “ov” because I thought she was trying to tell me to write “off” which made no sense. I wrote “could ov” and then when I got home and re-read it I realized I was being stupid and it was “could have” 😅 glad I learned that quickly!

Can you really differentiate when someone verbally says it?

It's could HAVE, not of. Drives me potty.

What drives me bonkers is when people say Witherspoons instead of Wetherspoons!

I've generally moved on from this kind of thought. First languages are first learnt through hearing and speaking. Reading and writing comes second. Pronunciations vary across the English speaking world. The language has also evolved a lot over the centuries, the English we speak now is very different to the English of the past. The English of the future will likely evolve in some ways away from how we've been speaking up until now. Languages are fluid not fixed

Yes! Drives me mad, but not as much as misuse of ‘decimate’ 😤😂
