So you’re buying a DNA kit as a Christmas gift… Before you make grandma spit in the tube and send it off to Ancestry, MyHeritage, or wherever, some things to consider: 🧵

1) Before you do this “for fun,” realize that these tests uncover real facts. Sometimes, facts no one wanted uncovered. Life-changing stuff. Every spring, the Reddit #genealogy board sees myriad people asking why they didn’t match their dad, or why their sister wasn’t listed as a full sibling. You may learn more than you bargained for.

I believe the DNA becomes property of the company to do with as they wish.

Just because your results have Ashkenazi Jewish in them does not make you in any way part Jewish. You may have had Jewish ancestors or you may have had ancestors who lived in the Pale of Settlement. It still does not make you partially Jewish. That's not a thing. Jewish Threads

Every time a DNA kit is sold in Milwaukee, my spouse gains a new sibling. (His father was a bartender.)

Additionally: DNA inheritance is random. So yes, your gggrandmother might've been Polish, but what "looks Polish" to the DNA companies' test populations, might end up not being inherited by the time it reaches you, because you randomly didn't inherit it. The further back the ancestor, the less likely you'll inherit their DNA. It doesn't mean you're not "Polish" or that's not your ancestor, but you'll need to follow the paper trail.

Great reminders! I am am moderator for a FB group of a couple thousand folks who found out their "dad wasn't their dad." I am one of those except I figured it out and tested to confirm. Not only was my dad not a Norwegian North Dakota farm boy, he was from what was then called Bombay, India! Mom had chutzpah passing my dark hair and dark eyes off as Norwegian 😂

And, your DNA may be used to find a relative who committed a heinous crime. You may unwittingly send someone you love to the backside of the penitentiary forever. Or even worse, give them the death penalty. And, remember, there have been mistakes…

You forgot they can, and often do use the dna results from these tests to look into cold cases. So you just might put great uncle Ed in jail for a crime he committed 60 years ago.
